Basilar artery ectasia: an unusual cause of trigeminal neuralgia.
نویسنده
چکیده
Basilar artery ectasia may be associated with trigeminal neuralgia as a consequence of trigeminal nerve compression by the aberrant artery. The case histories are presented of four patients, investigation of whom demonstrated the presence of an ectatic basilar artery thought to be the cause of facial pain. The value of intravenous digital subtraction angiography in the investigation of this condition is emphasised. The surgical management is discussed with particular reference to the choice between percutaneous thermocoagulation and posterior fossa microvascular decompression.

Management of Trigeminal Neuralgia Caused by an Intraneural Spiral Trigeminocerebellar Artery: A Case Report
The trigeminocerebellar artery (TCA) is a branch of the basilar artery that may have an intraneural course and may cause trigeminal neuralgia. We report a case of trigeminal neuralgia with right vertebral artery aneurysm caused by an intraneural TCA that compressed the trigeminal nerve in multiple places. We performed proximal trapping for the fusiform aneurysm with extra-intracranial bypass to...
متن کاملDirect compression by megadolichobasilar anomaly as a cause of trigeminal neuralgia; a case diagnosed by MRI.
A 49 year-old man with trigeminal neuralgia caused by megadolichobasilar anomaly was described. The patient having neuralgic attacks in the second branch of the right trigeminal nerve for two and a half years showed the angiographic evidence of a tortuous and elongated vertebrobasilar artery and MRI of the brain clearly visualized the root entry zone of the nerve having been compressed by the m...
متن کاملAn indolent headache revealing a megadolicho-diffuse vascular malformation.
A 61-year-old hypertensive man sought neurologic consultation due to a 20-year history of a right-sided dull headache of a low frequency, mild intensity, and without additional features. Headache responded to common analgesics and was not bothersome until his brother was diagnosed with cerebral aneurysm. He then pursued a brain vascular neuroimaging study. His brain magnetic resonance angiograp...
متن کاملResolution of trigeminal neuralgia by coil embolization of a persistent primitive trigeminal artery aneurysm.
The persistent primitive trigeminal artery (PTA) is a rare anastomosis between the carotid artery and basilar artery. While most PTAs are asymptomatic, lateral variants can occasionally compress the trigeminal nerve and precipitate trigeminal neuralgia. Aneurysms of the PTA are exceptionally rare in the literature and have not previously been associated with trigeminal neuralgia. We present the...
